Request more access

Microsoft just made it easier for users to request editing rights in Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files opened on the web. You don’t have to email the file owner or download view-only copies.

Announced via Microsoft’s 365 Insider blog, the new feature introduces a built-in “Request more access” option in Microsoft 365 web apps.

If you’re viewing a file on OneDrive or SharePoint and need editing or reviewing permissions, you can now ask directly from the top-right corner of the document.

Here’s how it works:

  • Open the document in Word, Excel, or PowerPoint (web version)
  • Click the Viewing icon
  • Select Request more access
  • Choose either Ask to edit or Ask to review
  • (Optional) Add a message for context
  • Hit Send

The file owner then receives an email with the request and can approve or deny access directly from there. Once approved, users just need to refresh the document to get started.

This update is live for enterprise Microsoft 365 users with internet access, though there are a few caveats.

Classic View in Word for the web doesn’t support this feature yet, and changes might take longer to reflect in larger or heavily shared files. Still, it’s a much-needed quality-of-life upgrade for smoother collaboration.
